Evie Smith prosecutes two men convicted of spray-painting the Radcliffe Camera at the University of Oxford, as part of a Just Stop Oil protest
Evie Smith prosecuted two defendants who had been charged with criminal damage offences following their Just Stop Oil protest at the Radcliffe Camera, Oxford, on 10 October 2023. The Radcliffe Camera is a Grade 1 listed building, constructed in 1737. It is part of the University of Oxford. The males spray-painted the iconic building using fire extinguishers filled with orange paint, causing thousands of pounds of damage.
Following several legal arguments, including those related to the availability of defences in this case, it was ruled that no defences in law were available to the defendants. One of the defendants, C, pleaded guilty to the offences. The second defendant, K, was unanimously convicted of the offences by the jury, following a three-day trial. Suspended sentences were imposed.
