Sophie Stannard Acts For Prosecution in Appeal Against Fan Convicted of Racially Abusing Spurs Captain

Sophie Stannard, instructed by CPS London, acted for the prosecution in the successful appeal against sentence of Robert Garland, who racially abused the Tottenham Hotspur FC’s Club Captain Son Heung-Min at Wood Green Crown Court following Spurs’ 1-0 win against Crystal Palace in May 2023.

The Appeal brought on behalf of the CPS followed Mr Garland’s guilty plea in the Magistrates court for racially aggravated harassment where he was originally sentenced to unpaid work and a fine. The Crown Court was persuaded to increase the sentence to include a 3-year Football Banning Order disallowing Mr Garland from attending any regulated match for three years and he will need to surrender his passport when international fixtures are scheduled.
