William Hughes QC and Szilvia Booker successfully defend in Murder trial at Old Bailey.
WHQC led SB in securing the acquittal of a 27 year old man charged with murder, after a five week trial at the Central Criminal Court before HHJ Katz QC. The murder took place in July 2020 on the Kingswood Estate in West Dulwich. Two co-defendants were convicted of murder.
The case was the very first at the Old Bailey to use pre-recorded evidence of two witnesses under 16 years of age in a trial for murder pursuant to s28 Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999. After extensive preliminary legal argument, the witnesses evidence was recorded over two days in March 2021 (the trial Commenced in August and concluded on 8th October 2021). This required extensive and detailed pre-trial preparation by William and Szilvia, which was particularly complicated given the nature of the allegation against their client.
